Punjabi Gurmukhi Alphabet (Painti) Chart

Punjabi in India is written in Gurmukhi. Its 35 letters, the painti akhri, are recited in seven rows of five, starting ੳ ਅ ੲ ਸ ਹ. The first three letters carry vowel sounds and the rest are consonants. Six more letters with a dot at the foot (pair bindi) write sounds such as sh, z and f.

After a consonant, vowel sounds are written with signs called lagan matra. The chart shows each one with ਕ, together with its name, so your child can read any syllable once the letters are familiar.
